Gálvez-Ruiz ( ) Grupo de Fı́sica de Fluidos y Biocoloides Departamento de Fı́sica Aplicada Universidad de Granada 18071 Granada Spain E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The interactions between three of the major phospholipids in biomembranes, distearoylphosphatidylethanolamine, distearoylphosphatidylcholine and sphyngomyelin, forming monolayers at the air—water interface, are studied. Following the Goodrich [1] thermodynamic formulation, a quantitative analysis on these interactions is carried out. The general conclusion reached is that, depending on the molecular structure of the lipid and the experimental temperature, significant interactions occur between lipid molecules. One hypothesis is the possibility that, the usual miscibility analysis, in mixed monolayers, could be inadequate to provide information on the interactions in the systems which the hydration forces are significant, is advanced.

Polymer Stabilized Lipid Membranes: Langmuir Monolayers

Polymer-tethered membranes combine fascinating structural, dynamic, and viscoelastic properties. Many important insights into these peculiar supramolecular systems can be obtained from studies on polymer-tethered monolayers. This chapter discusses recent experimental findings on polymer-tethered monolayers at the air–water interface. In particular, Langmuir monolayers which are comprised of pur...

Preparation of Pluronic/Bile salt/Phospholipid Mixed Micelles as Drug Solubility Enhancer and Study the Effect of the PPO Block Size on the Solubility of Pyrene

Pluronic/bile salt/phospholipid mixed micelles (Pluronic/BS/PS-MM) drug carrier system for solubilization hydrophobic drugs was developed. A typical hydrophobic compound, pyrene, was selected as a representative hydrophobic compound to model the hydrophobic drugs. Five Pluronics, F68, F88, F98, F108, and F127 with different PPO chain length were studied. CMC data and solubilization capacities w...

Packing of ganglioside-phospholipid monolayers: an x-ray diffraction and reflectivity study.

Using synchrotron grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction (GIXD) and reflectivity, the in-plane and out-of-plane structure of mixed ganglioside-phospholipid monolayers was investigated at the air-water interface. Mixed monolayers of 0, 5, 10, 20, and 100 mol% ganglioside GM(1) and the phospholipid dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) were studied in the solid phase at 23 degrees C and a surfa...
